Leeds soul 7-piece Mamilah have returned with single 'Disappear' to accompany their second EP release, Talk Less, that will drop on 15 May.
The group revealed to Jazz Revelations last September in an interview that they were ready to get back into the studio and 'Disappear' is a fantastic introduction to their new music. The lush vocals and ethereal arrangements are reminiscent of ‘Back the Black’ era Amy Winehouse, with strong influences taken from classic Motown and the current UK Jazz & Soul scene reminiscent of Brownswood Recordings releases. Lydia Kotsirea's lyrics celebrate how people pull together and find common ground in times of hardship and inequality, when you may expect the exact opposite reaction.
Tom Richards jumps on the sax for this single and alongside Dan Coulthurst on trumpet, they create a beautiful, summery feel that bounces along to the melody. Aisling Doherty's keys and Ed Allen's guitar flow together superbly, and as the song breaks down the bass of Freddie Ricketts and Matthew Hill's drums push the song to reach it's uplifting feeling as Kotsirea's vocals gush out with her typical mixture of gentle and impassioned vocals that cut through and provide a magnificent melody for the band to move to. The lyric of 'heaven' enhances the spiritual mood of 'Disappear' furthermore.
Mamilah sadly have had to postpone their headline EP launch at Headrow House in May due to the current coronavirus situation. However, 'Disappear' features on Leeds promoters Super Friendz's compilation Super Friendz Isolation Mixtape Volume 1 that dropped on 6 April, a pay as you feel Bandcamp exclusive of 18 tracks from some of their favourite artists from Leeds and the surrounding area. The donations will be pooled and redistributed back amongst all the featured artists to help them in this uncertain times - such kind generosity from Super Friendz during these tough times.
We look forward to Mamilah cheering us up when Talk Less drops in a month's time - 'Disappear' is a wonderful song to remind us of the fantastic talent we still have in Leeds that can help you through the weeks of lockdown.
